Statement from the President of CARBICA on the Barbados Archival Repository Fire
The Caribbean Branch of the International Council on Archives (CARRBICA) notes, with great sadness and deep concern, the devastating fire that engulfed an archival repository building in Barbados. This tragic incident has not only resulted in the loss of invaluable historical records but has also dealt a severe blow to our collective cultural heritage.
The archives housed in this repository were a testament to the rich and diverse history of Barbados and the wider Caribbean region. They contained documents that chronicled centuries of our shared past, serving as vital resources for researchers, educators, and all those passionate about preserving our cultural identity.
CARBICA stands in solidarity with the people of Barbados during this difficult time. We extend our heartfelt commiserations to all those affected by the fire, particularly the archivists and historians who dedicated their lives to the preservation of our history.
In response to this tragedy, CARBICA is committed to supporting the recovery and revitalization efforts. We pledge to work closely with the relevant archival authorities, local institutions, and international partners to assist with the assessment of the damage, salvage whatever records are salvageable, and assist in recovery efforts for the archival collections.
We call upon governments, organizations, and individuals across the Caribbean and beyond to join us in this endeavor. Together, we can ensure that the memory and history contained within these archives are not lost forever. Let us unite our efforts to preserve, protect, and promote our cultural heritage for future generations.
As we mourn the loss of irreplaceable archival materials, let us also reaffirm our dedication to strengthening our archival institutions and safeguarding our heritage. This tragic event serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of robust archival practices and disaster preparedness measures.
CARBICA remains steadfast in its mission to advance the preservation of documentary heritage in the Caribbean. We will continue to work tirelessly to support our member institutions and uphold the principles of preservation, access, and advocacy.
Together, let us turn this moment of loss into an opportunity for renewal and resilience. Let us honor the memory of what has been lost by redoubling our efforts to protect and preserve our archival treasures.
