Carbica Announces Belizean Archivist to Attend

The President and Executive Committee of  CARBICA are pleased to announce that Mary Alpuche, (Acting) Assistant Archivist at Belize has been awarded sponsorship to attend the 2013 ICA-SUV Conference “The New Age Archivist” Managing Archives in a Digital World”  to be held the last week of June in Barbados.

Miss Alpuche is well placed to take advantage of this regional opportunity.  She joined the Belize Archives and Records Service (BARS) in 2007 as a Research Information Officer and since 2011 has been the (Acting) Assistant Archivist responsible for managing a broad spectrum of archival activities including acquisitions, arrangement & description as well as reference and outreach in the Public Reading Room.

Ms. Alpuche has shown a dedicated passion for her chosen profession and counts several special projects as shaping her resolve to grow professionally.  She was responsible for coordinating the acquisition of a large collection of Belizean Colonial and Post-Independence records, a large project which took over a year to complete.   In 2012 she collaborated with the Museum of Belize to stage an acclaimed exhibit that celebrated the 1798 Battle of St. George’s Caye and the movement towards Belize’s Independence in 1981.  She counts her contribution in support of Belize’s participation in the “Registry of Slaves of the British Caribbean 1817-1834” for UNESCO’s Memory of the World project as among her most rewarding projects.

Miss Alpuche believes that her work with BARS has instilled in her a great appreciation for history and pride as a guardian of Belize’s rich documentary heritage. She feels that her attendance at the Barbados Workshop and Conference will help her to more carefully identify the needs of her country’s national archives and to meet the challenges of moving toward digital access and preservation.    CARBICA fully supports Mary’s career objectives and wish her every success going forward.
